Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - The central bank of Bangladesh on Monday issued show-cause notice against 20 officials, involved in demonstration in front of its main building, before the board meeting on Sunday.
“We’ve issued the show-cause notices against the officials involved in such unruly activities in line with our board of directors meeting decision,” a top central banker told BBN in Dhaka.
Among the officials, 11 deputy general mangers (DGMs), six joint directors (JDs) and three deputy directors (DDs) of the central bank.
“The officials will have to clarify their positions within three days after receiving the notices,” the central banker explained.
The Bangladesh Bank (BB), the country’s central bank, issued the notice under sections 19(1), 44 and 42 of the Bangladesh Bank Staff Regulation, 2003, he added.
On Sunday, a good number of BB officials staged demonstration in front of the central bank main building before the board meeting, protesting the initiative of hiring a general manager (GM) for Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) on contractual basis.
They also distributed copies of a letter, expressing concern over the issue, to the BB board of directors, while they were entering the building to join the meeting.
Earlier, the officials also requested the BB governor not to appoint any GM for BFIU on contractual basis, bypassing a regular GM of the central bank.
On the same, the BB decided to hire the GM on contractual basis for strengthening functions of its Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU).
The decision was taken at a meeting of the central bank board of directors held in its headquarters in Dhaka on Sunday afternoon with BB Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman in the chair.
