Bangladesh bans fish export during Ramadan

Last updated: July 31, 2012
Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- The government has suspended the export of all kinds of raw fish except shrimp for Ramadan to ensure its smooth supply and keep the price at a tolerable level.
“The government has decided to stop the export of all types of fish except shrimp until further notice,” the commerce ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
It said the decision was taken to ensure the adequate supply of fish in the market during Ramadan and keep the prices stable in the overheated market.
On Monday, the parliamentary watchdog on the Commerce Ministry recommended halting the export of fish during Ramadan to ensure its sufficient supply in the market.
On Sunday, apex trade body FBCCI urged the government to keep the export of fish suspended during Ramadan mentioning that its monitoring cell had found the export of fish contributed to its short supply in the market pushing up its prices with the start of the holy month.
