Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-Bangladesh began the trial run of biometric registration system for mobile phone subscriber identity module (SIM) cards on Wednesday.
The system was inaugurated on Wednesday at the Post and Telecommunications Division of the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy, the information and communication technology affairs adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, inaugurated the new process of the SIM cards registration.
While inaugurating the opening ceremony, Wazed put his thumb across a biometric register to purchase a SIM card.
Today’s inaugural ceremony is a trial run of the
biometric SIM registration system which was earlier scheduled to begin on November 1.
The official procedure of the biometric SIM registration is expected to start from December 16.
The mobile operators will have to complete the biometric SIM registration processes by March next year, otherwise they would have to face penalty for unverified SIM, Tarana Halim, state minister for Post and Telecommunications Ministry, told newsmen earlier.
The mobile phone users would get three months time to re-register their SIM cards under the new system as all unregistered SIMs would be blocked after the deadline, Halim added.
She also said the department concerned would monitor the update of the SIM registration process.
