Bangladesh for developing central database for scholarship

Last updated: December 18, 2016

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Fazle Kabir has emphasized on developing a central database for fair distribution of financial aid among meritorious students.
"Owing to absence of a database for allocating monetary support for students, some of them receive funds from more than one financial institution while many underprivileged students even don't get such support from a single source," the central bank chief said while addressing at a scholarship distribution ceremony held in the capital Dhaka on Saturday. It was organized by the National Credit and Commerce (NCC) Bank Limited.
The BB governor also said the most important element of knowledge is education which is also basic human rights. “Students are future driving force of knowledge, information and economic growth. Banking sector is doing proper maintenance of merit to facilitate intellectual development of underprivileged meritorious students.”
Keeping this in view, the BB has already made it mandatory for all of the banks to allocate 30 per cent of their CSR fund for the education sector, according to the BB governor.
It is essential to invest more for quality enhancement in the education sector to achieve the target of becoming a developed country by the year 2040, Mr. Kabir noted.
Chairman of NCC Bank Engineer Abdus Salam and Vice Chairman A.S.M Mainuddin Monem were attended the programme as special guests while Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Golam Hafiz Ahmed presided over the function.
Among others students, guardians and faculty members of different universities attended the programme.
The private commercial bank provided 66 insolvent students from various colleges and universities with financial support based on their merit this year.

The amount of money for the selected students has been increased to BDT 36,000 annually from previous year's BDT 18,000.
