Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)– Foreign Minister Dipu Moni on Tuesday called for sharing of best practices and mutual cooperation among developing and developed countries for rooting out corruption and trans-boundary crimes.
She made the remarks during a meeting with a team comprising senior representatives of the governments of Iran and Paraguay and the UN office of Drugs and Crime visiting from Vienna.
The visit is a part of the Peer Review Mechanism for assessing status of Bangladesh’s implementation of the Corruption Convention.
The foreign minister reiterated strong determination of the government to strengthen every institution and legislation to combat corruption for effective implementation of the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) by Bangladesh.
Dipu Moni briefed the team on the wide range of domestic legislation undertaken by the present government for upgrading those to international standard for combating corruption, money laundering, organized transnational crime and asset recovery in collaboration with international partners.
The representatives of the UNCAC team praised Bangladesh’s high political and institutional commitment towards greater transparency, accountability and good governance despite its capacity and resource constraints.
Under the UNCAC peer review mechanism, state parties to UNCAC form a team to evaluate the national level implementation of the Convention by another state party.
Under this mechanism Iran and Paraguay are reviewing Bangladesh’s case while Bangladesh and the USA are scheduled to review Fiji’s implementation of the UNCAC.
