Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-The GSMA and the Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh (AMTOB) have called on the Bangladesh government to reform the legislative and policy framework of the telecom sector in order to accommodate the technological developments.
The initiative was launched at a workshop organised by the GSMA, in cooperation with the AMTOB on ‘Realising the potential of mobile in Bangladesh’, reports telecompaper.
Industry representatives believe the 1998 National Telecoms Policy needs to be updated to keep up with changing technology and to encourage the development of mobile-enabled services in the areas of health, education.
The revised regulations should also power financial inclusion for all, in line with the ‘Digital Bangladesh’ strategy.
Mobile network operators and international organisations support a public-private dialogue through formation of a committee with government representatives to start the review of the current legislative, policy and regulatory framework governing the operations of mobile operators. The committee would also make recommendations around specific reforms to the framework that may be necessary in order to support the realisation of the government of Bangladesh’s Vision 2021 plan’ and the associated ‘Perspective Plan 2010-2021’ and any further objective that may be set within the forthcoming ‘Vision 2041’.”
