Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – Several thousand of people blocked the Dinajpur-Dhaka highway at different points in Phulbari since Saturday morning during a daylong general strike enforced by National Committee for Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Port and Power Protection.
Transport movement on the highway remained suspended since 6:00am following the blockade, according to reports.
The national committee called the strike, generally known as hartal in face of the section 144 imposed by the government to foil their meeting, which was scheduled for Friday afternoon protesting the government decision to let Asia Energy resume its survey in coal mine area.
All educational institutions, business establishments and most shops remain closed in the upazila since morning.
Additional police have been posted at different points in the upazila.
