Bangladesh imposes ban on rice export until June 30, 2013

Last updated: August 9, 2012
Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- The government has imposed a ban on export of all types of rice except aromatic ones until June 30 next year aiming to increase the supply to the domestic market and keep the prices stable.
The Commerce Ministry has issued the order under the Imports and exports (Control) Act, 1950 on July 17, a Bangladesh Bank notification said on Wednesday.
Earlier, on July 29, Finance Minister AMA Muhith said the government is planning to export rice as the country is now much more stable in its production and can meet the domestic demand.
“Although the final decision has not been taken yet, it’s final to explore the market for rice export,” he said after an inter-ministerial meeting on food and poultry sectors at the Secretariat.
