New Delhi, India (BBN)-India and Bangladesh on Wednesday welcomed a four-way motor vehicle pact that Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal had signed in June and pledged to strengthen measures to increase regional connectivity.
The development came during a meeting between Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, reports the Livemint.com.
Hasina was in India to attend the funeral of India’s First Lady Suvra Mukherjee, wife of President Pranab Mukherjee.
Suvra Mukherjee passed away on Tuesday after a prolonged illness.
“Prime Minister Modi thanked Prime Minister Hasina for her special gesture of visiting India to attend the funeral of Suvra Mukherjee,” a government statement said.
“Fondly recalling his visit to Bangladesh in earlier this year in June, Prime Minister Modi thanked Prime Minister Hasina for the progress achieved in timely and peaceful implementation of the Land Boundary Agreement,” the statement said.
This was a reference to the clinching of the 34 year old agreement during Modi’s visit to Bangladesh in June.
“Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Hasina welcomed the signing of the BBIN (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal) Motor Vehicle Agreement, and agreed to strengthen measures to increase regional connectivity,” it said.
“Prime Minister Modi invited Prime Minister Hasina to visit India for an official visit at the earliest. Prime Minister Hasina accepted the invitation,” it added.
