Bangladesh: Inflation Intensifies in April

Last updated: May 6, 2026

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Inflationary pressure on Bangladesh’s economy intensified in April, as inflation crossed 9.0 per cent, driven by a sharp rise in both food and non-food prices amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Inflation as measured by the consumers' price index (CPI) rose to 9.04 per cent in April 2026 from 8.71 per cent of the previous month on the point-to-point basis, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS)’s latest data, released on Wednesday.

The inflation in the case of food items rose to 8.39 per cent in April from 8.24 per cent a month before while the non-food inflation increased to 9.57 per cent from 9.09 per cent on the point-to-point basis.

However, overall inflation eased slightly to 8.59 per cent on a 12-month average basis during the period under review, down from 8.60 per cent a month earlier, according to the BBS data.

Earlier on April 28, the central bank warns that inflationary pressures may intensify in the near term, largely driven by persistently high global oil prices and domestic fuel price adjustments.

“….near-term inflationary pressures are expected to intensify due to higher global oil prices, domestic fuel price adjustments, and ongoing energy supply constraints,” the Bangladesh Bank (BB) said in its latest report on Inflation Dynamics in Bangladesh January-March 2026.

The BB’s latest observation came just nine days after the government raised domestic fuel prices in response to continued increases in global petroleum product prices, underscoring mounting external cost pressures on the economy.

Officials and economists, however, said these cost-push factors are now feeding through into higher transportation and production costs, potentially widening price pressures across the supply chain and complicating efforts to anchor inflation expectations.
