Bangladesh lifts ban on fish export except hilsa

Last updated: September 24, 2012
Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - The government has lifted ban on export of all kinds of fishes except hilsa for the public interest.
All the previous orders by the ministry for imposing ban on fish export will be treated as null and void, a commerce ministry circular said on Sunday, adding from now there is no hurdle to export fishes.
Earlier on July 31, the government banned export of all kinds of sweet water fishes (white fish) and hilsa to keep prices of fish at an affordable level during the holy month of Ramadan. But shrimp has been kept out of the export ban.
The government took the decision following a request from the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) to impose ban on export of fishes.
Later on August 05, the government extended the ban on hilsa and white fish export except shrimp and Eel fish until further order.
The country produces about 3.1 million tons of fishes of which some 15,000 to 20,000 tons of sweet water fishes are exported.
