Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-Although recent industrial accidents coupled with other issues have raced challenges for the Bangladesh textile industry, which is the second largest exporter of readymade garments (RMG), the government of Bangladesh and the textile manufacturers are making efforts to rectify the challenges faced by the sector since it is the main source of income for the country, according to industry representatives.
In a conversation with fibre2fashion correspondent Ilin Mathew, Humayun Kabir Salim, CEO of Dird Composite Textile Ltd (textile firm), said, “Bangladesh government has taken several initiatives to improve country’s textile industry keeping in mind as most prioritised sector in the country.”
In a similar vein, Nasir Ahmed, Owner of Nathan Fashion (textile factory), says, “Textile and RMG sectors are one of the main sources of income for Bangladesh and the government has always made efforts to boost the sector.”
Echoing him, Md Atiqul Islam, President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturer’s and Exporter’s Association (BGMEA), says, “We have a democratic government in Bangladesh and both the government as well as the textile sector is working closely together to advance the agenda of the country’s economic development,” reports Fibre2fashion.
When asked about the steps taken by the country to improve the safety situations in Bangladesh textile industry, Ahmed says, “With regard to the recent incidents in Bangladesh, the government has taken precautions by forming a group of engineers to verify and to check the stability of all factory buildings.”
Explaining further, Salim says, “Devastating Rana Plaza collapse and Tazreen fire accident along with political and other issues had heavily challenged our textile and garment sector.”
“Vigilance from Bangladesh government as well as efforts from all enlightened management of the industries will make our industry safe and all the negative impacts will be capitalized to learn lesson for better textile and garment industry,” he concludes.
