Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – Bangladesh received $974.99 million as remittance between January 1 and January 23 from its nationals working abroad, officials said.
“We expect that the flow of inward remittance may cross $1.30 billion by the end of this month,” a senior official of the Bangladesh Bank (BB) told BBN in Dhaka.
The remittances from Bangladeshi nationals working abroad were estimated at US$1.27 billion in December, 2014, up by $ 92.11 million from the level of the previous month. In November last the remittances stood at $1.18 billion.
The BB earlier took a series of measures to encourage the expatriate Bangladeshis to send their hard-earned money through the formal banking channel, instead of the illegal “hundi” system to help boost the country’s foreign exchange reserve.
Country’s foreign exchange reserve rose to $21. 86 billion on Monday from $21.83 billion in the previous working day following the higher inflow of remittances.
