Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-Bangladesh inked two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with two Indian companies on Saturday to set up 4,600-megawatt mega power plants in the country.
The Power Development Board (PDB) of Bangladesh and Indian companies- Adani Group and Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group’s Reliance Power – signed the MoUs in Dhaka.
The mega power project deals were signed during the first day of Indian PM Narendra Modi’s two-day Dhaka visit that begins on Saturday.
Adani Group sealed the deal for 1,600 MW capacity while Reliance Power inked the agreement for a 3,000-MW project in Bangladesh.
The plans for the power projects are in line with Modi’s vision of building an EU-modelled economic zone connecting Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan with India.
The two projects are expected to help Bangladesh achieve its 20,000-MW target by 2020, media reports said.
The projects will also help ease a 7,000-MW power deficiency in the country.
The Indian Express adds: The projects were originally to be signed off before or after the Modi’s visit.
But Dhaka insisted that the pacts be inked during the two-day tour.
The much-delayed Land Boundary Agreement of 1974 will be finally ratified in Mamata Banerjee’s presence at Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s office.
