Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Bangladesh on Thursday signed a primary deal with Russia for installing a 2000 MW nuclear power plant at Rooppur in the country’s northern Pabna district, officials said.
By signing the agreement, the government launched the country's first nuclear power plant project which would be completed in 2017-18 at the cost of US$ 1.5-2.0 billions.
Secretary to the Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology Abdur Rob Howlader, and ICT and Deputy Director General of State Atomic Energy Corporation, ROSATOM, Nickolay Spasskiy, initialed the deal on behalf of their respective governments at Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission in Dhaka.
State Minister for Science and ICT, Yeafesh Osman, Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Gennady P. Trotsenko and high officials of the ministry and Russian Embassy were present on the occasion.
Two nuclear power plant projects -1000MW each- will be implemented under the agreement. The deal has paved the way for mobilizing required funds through signing agreements at government to government level.
