Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has reduced the bandwidth charge further to BDT 8000 from BDT 10,000 to spread the communication services at the grassroots, officials said.
The new tariff will be effective from September 1 this year, the telecom regulator said.
The authority reduced the charge of the bandwidth for the third time in last three years, the BTRC officials said.
In 2009, the charge was BDT 28000. The charge was reduced in order to increase internet use and spread the network infrastructure to grassroots level, they added.
Akhtaruzzaman Manju, President of the internet service provider of Bangladesh (ISPB) demanded withdrawal of 15 percent value added tax (VAT), as maintenance cost and other charges are very high compared to the bandwidth price.
Sumon Ahmed Sabir, vice-president of the ISPB, welcomed the regulator's move to bring down the bandwidth price, saying that the internet user would get more speed and capacity along with low price.
