Bangladesh stocks return to the red

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Stocks at the country’s both the bourses -- Dhaka and Chittagong -– entered the negative territory on Tuesday as most of the investors’ followed ‘wait-and-see’ policy centering writ issue, market operators said.
 
The Dhaka stock exchange (DSE) shot up more than 40 points within 40 minutes upon resumption of day’s trading. After that it decline steadily rest of the session and finally ended almost 37 points lower.
 
The DGEN, the benchmark general index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), slipped 36.94 points or 0.73 per cent to close at 5,020.21.
 
The day’s turnover value stood at BDT 4.33 billion which was 24.42 percent higher compared to BDt 3.48 billion in the previous session.
 
Losers outshined the gainers as out of 266 issues traded, 73 closed positive, 170 negative and 23 remained unchanged.
 
A total of 89.71 million shares changed hands on the day against 67.44 million in the previous session. The trade deals also increased to 97,194 against Monday’s 85,291.
 
The total market capitalization of the DSE stood at BDT 2,621.94 billion against BDT 2,638.41 billion in the previous session.
 
Among the major sectors, banking sector was the only gaining which closed 0.14 per cent higher.
 
Non-banking financial institutions (NBFIs) lost 2.10 percent, the most among the major sectors, followed by fuel and power 1.41 percent, telecommunications 1.34 percent and pharmaceuticals 0.40 percent.
 
UCBL topped the turnover chart with shares worth BDT 198.59 million changing hands.
 
The other turnover leaders were LankaBangla Finance, Beximco Limited, City Bank, Beximco Pharma, Jamuna Oil, Meghna Petroleum, Confidence Cement, SIBL and Grameenphone.
 
National Tea Company was the day’s highest gainer posting a rise of 7.11 per cent. It was followed by Fifth ICB, Pragati Insurance, Global Insurance, Pioneer Insurance, GQ Ball Pen, Trust Bank, Al-Arafa Islami bank, ACI Formulations and Republic Insurance.
 
The day’s worst losers included Confidence Cement, MBL First Mutual Fund, Provati Insurance, Sonarbangla Insurance, Modern Dyeing, Samata Leather, Beach Hatchery, Continental Insurance, AIBL First Mutual Fund and Prime Finance.
Meanwhile, Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) key index, CSCX, shed 81.33 percent to close at 9472.1437. The port city bourse, however, showed a gain of 123.75 points to close at 9553.4831 on Monday. 
At the CSE, 45 gained, 124 suffered losses and 14 remained unchanged at the end of the day’s trading.
