Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – The Bangladesh Taka (BDT) depreciated 10 paisa against the US dollar on Thursday due to higher demand of the greenback in the inter-bank foreign exchange market.

The exchange rate of the BDT against the US dollar was quoted at maximum BDT 83.70 during the evening transaction today.

In the opening trading today, the exchange rate of the local currency against the American currency was quoted at maximum BDT 83.60.

“The local currency has depreciated against the US dollar mainly due to higher demand of the greenback in the market,” a senior treasury official of a leading private commercial bank told the BBN in Dhaka Thursday evening.

The demand for the greenback has increased gradually in the recent days following the higher import payment obligations, he also added.

On Tuesday, the Bangladesh Taka depreciated 50 paisa in a single day due to the higher demand of the US currency in the market.

Earlier, the exchange rate of the BDT remained static for a long time in the inter-bank forex market. The rate was 83.10 then.
