Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – The Bangladesh Taka (BDT) depreciated 50 paisa in a single day Tuesday against the US dollar due to higher demand of the greenback in the inter-bank foreign exchange market.
The exchange rate of the BDT against the US dollar was quoted at maximum BDT 83.60 during the evening transaction.
In the opening trading today, the exchange rate of the local currency against the American currency was quoted at maximum BDT 83.10. The rate remained static for some days.
“The local currency has depreciated against the US dollar significantly today mainly due to higher demand of the greenback in the market,” a senior treasury official of a leading private commercial bank told the BBN in Dhaka Tuesday evening.
The demand for the greenback has increased gradually in the recent days following the higher import payment obligations, he also added.
