Bangladesh to amend Copy Right Act

Last updated: November 23, 2009

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- The government has taken steps to amend the Copy Right Act 2006.

Information Secretary Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury said this on Sunday at an inter-ministerial meeting to prevent production and exhibition of obscene films and video piracy.

He said the Ministry of Cultural Affairs has already been requested to amend the act with specific proposals, according to an official press statement.

He urged all to make their united efforts for development of the film industry in the country.

Video piracy and vulgarism could be removed from the film industry if the government and associations of film producers, directors and exhibitors work together, he said.

Convenor of the anti-piracy taskforce constituted by the Ministry of Information Major Masum Ahmed apprised the meeting that the taskforce seized a total of 328,477 pirated CD and DVD and 14,600 obscene films over the last six months.

About 125 persons were arrested in this connection and 65 cases were filed against them, he said.
