Bangladesh to buy 450 buses for capital Dhaka

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- The government will procure 450 articulated, single and double- decker buses at BDT 3.03 billion, to be financed from the Indian US$1.0 billion credit, aiming to ensure smooth transportation for the city residents.

The highest project approval body of the government ECNEC (Executive Committee of the National Economic Council) endorsed the bus purchase project on Tuesday with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, officials confirmed.

Under the project, the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) will buy 100 AC single decker, and 300 non-AC double decker and 50 articulated buses to ply on the city’s different routes.

The state-run transport service provider has undertaken the project at a cost of BDT 3.03 billion, where BDT 2.54 billion would come from the Indian $1.0 billion loan, they added.

The ECNEC meeting also approved 11 other projects at a total cost of BDT 17.83 billion for building and repairing river embankments, constructing roads, improving education and upgrading two stadiums ahead of the next World Cup Cricket.

The projects include BDT 1.00 billion cost for Jagannath University Development, BDT 5.75 billion cost for post-literacy and continuous education for manpower development project-2 (second revised) and BDT 540 million for development of adjacent roads and beautification of the Mirpur and Bangabandhucricket stadiums.
