Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)– The government is going to introduce the first comprehensive tea policy aiming to overcome the existing crisis in this profitable and potential sector for boosting production and export.

The policy is likely to be finalized by February this year, officials said.

A discussion on the draft tea policy was held at the commerce ministry on Tuesday with Commerce Minister Faruk Khan in the chair.

It was decided in the meeting that the government will elicit public opinion on the draft policy available at the website of the tea board on www.teaboard.gov.bd from 13 January or anyone may directly write to its chairman by 31 January or send copy to the commerce ministry’s website.

The minister said demand for tea has been gradually increasing in the country, but tea production has not increased in step with demand. “The export is also sliding which can only be prevented through average increased production and use of land.”
