Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - The nation will observe a mourning day across the country on Tuesday in memory of the people killed in garment factory fire in Ashulia and flyover collapse in the port city Chittagong.
The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat in the capital Dhaka with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
The Cabinet at the beginning of its weekly meeting adopted a condolence resolution on both the incidents expressing deep shock and sorrow at the tragic death of 111 garment workers in the devastating fire incident and another 12 in the girder collapse.
The government also announced a one-day vacation on Tuesday for all readymade garment (RMG) units across the country, M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, the cabinet secretary, told reporters after the meeting.
As part of the national mourning, national flags will be hoisted half mast at the offices of all government, semi-government and autonomous and academic institutions as well as all other important buildings.
Special prayers will be offered in all mosques seeking eternal peace of the departed souls.
Besides, prayers will also be arranged at the places of worships of other religions, the secretary added.
At least 111 people were killed and nearly 100 injured in a devastating fire at Tazreen Fashion Ltd at Nischintapur on the capital's suburb Ashulia on Saturday.
On the other hand, 12 people were killed and 15 injured when the concrete girders of an under-construction flyover at Bahaddarhat in Chittagong collapsed on a kitchen market on Saturday.
