Bangladesh to set up six more land ports

Last updated: February 3, 2012
Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - The government has decided to establish six more land ports across the country aiming to boost trade activities with neighboring countries, officials said.
The land ports will be established in Sonaihat of Kurigram district, Chilahati of Nilphamari district, Pragpur of Kushtia district, Jiban Nagar and Darshana of Chuadanga district, and Mujibnagar of Meherpur district.
A senior official government official said the decision for establishment of the land ports has been taken with a view to increasing economic activities in the areas where those will be located.
He also said the land ports will start operation after the development of necessary infrastructures.
Currently, the country has a total of 17 land ports of which the Bangladesh Land Port Authority (BLPA) itself runs 11 and the rest are being operated by private operators. Some of them are not fully functional due to lack of necessary infrastructure.
