Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- The central bank of Bangladesh on Friday it is withdrawing the proposed draft bill recommending a maximum penalty of death for production and circulation of counterfeit currency notes.
"The central bank governor has already instructed to withdraw the proposed draft legislation considering the national, international and human rights perspective," a senior official of the Bangladesh Bank (BB), the country’s central bank, told BBN in Dhaka.
He said the BB would not do anything that goes against human rights and sentiment of the national and international community. "The central bank has a human facet and it cannot introduce any 'draconian law' that goes against human rights," he said quoting BB Governor.
The central banker also said the BB would put its endeavour to scrutinize the law of other central banks of the world aimed at enacting stringent law soon to prevent production and circulation of counterfeit currency notes.
The BB had taken initiative to prescribe capital punishment against circulation of counterfeit currency notes in the wake of unprecedented rise in the crime.
