Bangkok, Thailand (BBN)-Bangladesh Women got off to a great start in the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Qualifier 2015 in Bangkok on Saturday.
Bangladesh defeated Thailand by 73 runs at the Thailand Cricket Ground, reports the ICC.
An all-round effort helped Bangladesh register a comprehensive win over the home side.
Thailand opted to bowl first and, at the break, the decision seemed to be the right one.
The bowlers did well to keep Bangladesh to 105 for 6 with Nattaya Boochatham and Suleeporn Laomi picking up two wickets apiece.
Ayasha Rahman, the opener, made a crucial 32-ball 30 to help Bangladesh got past 100, which proved more than enough in the end.
In reply, Thailand folded for 32, the lowest score in Women’s Twenty20.
Chanida Sutthiruang top-scored with an 18-ball 13 while seven batters failed to open their account.
Before this game, the record was held by Sri Lanka when it could manage just 57, also against Bangladesh, in 2012.
Bangladesh will now play Scotland while Thailand will play Papua New Guinea in its next game on Sunday.
In the second game of the day, Ireland cruised to a eight-wicket win over Netherlands at the Asian Institute Technology Ground.
Netherlands chose to bat and got off to a steady start. Miranda Veringmeier and Sterre Kalis (12) scored 53 runs for the first wicket to lay a solid platform for a late onslaught.
Ciara Metcalfe bowled Kalis in the 12 over and that turned out to be the knockout punch.
Netherlands collapsed from there and was reduced to 88 for 6 by the end of the 18th over.
Veringmeier fought hard for her 46-ball 53, but the team could only post 90 for 6 in the 20 overs.
Isobel Joyce, the left-arm pacer, picked up 3 for 18.
With half the job done, Clare Shillington and Cecelia Joyce, the openers, raced away to 74 in the first eight overs. Shillington scored a 29-ball 33 while Joyce blasted 39 off 30.
Both openers were dismissed in space of eight runs, but the opening stand meant Ireland cruised to a comfortable win.
Ireland will look to continue the momentum against China on Sunday while Netherlands will take on Zimbabwe next.
