Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)
- Bangladesh’s inflation as measured by consumers’ price index (CPI) eased slightly in the month of June on the point-to-point basis mainly due to lower price of food items.

The inflation decreased 17 basis points to 9.72 per cent in June this calendar year from 9.89 per cent a month before. It was 9.94 per cent in May, 2023.

Food inflation also fell 34 basis points to 10.42 per cent in June from 10.76 per cent a month ago while non-food inflation slipped only four basis points to 9.15 per cent from 9.19 per cent on the point-to-point basis.

Inflation moderated both in rural and urban areas in June compared to May, according to the state-run Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

The country’s food inflation witnessed a falling trend while food items maintained a downward tendency in the global market, according to the World Bank report.

In June 2024, food prices dropped by 2.50 per cent in the international market, the World Bank said in its commodity markets report for June, 2024.

On the other hand, the rate of annual average inflation remained unchanged at 9.73 per cent in May from the previous level, according to the BBS’s latest data, released on Sunday.

The government initially set the inflation target for the current fiscal (FY), 2023-24, at 6.0 per cent, which was later revised to 7.5 per cent on annual average basis.

The central bank of Bangladesh is expected to take measures further in the next monetary policy statement (MPS), which is scheduled to be announced within July after analyzing the CPI inflation of June.
