Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - Bangladesh’s inflation as measured by consumers’ price index reached at 11.38 per cent in the month of November on the point-to-point basis mainly due to higher prices of both food and non-food items.
The inflation jumped 51 basis points to 11.38 per cent in November this calendar year from 10.87 per cent a month before. It was 9.72 per cent in June, 2024.
Food inflation surged 124 basis points to 13.80 per cent in November from 12.66 per cent a month ago while non-food inflation rose to 9.39 per cent from 9.34 per cent on the point-to-point basis.
On the other hand, the rate of annual average inflation rose to 10.22 per cent in November from 10.05 per cent in October, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS)’s latest data, released on Thursday.
The government has already set the inflation target for the current fiscal (FY), 2024-25, at 6.50 per cent. It was 9.73 per cent in FY’24.
However, rural people bore the burden of increasing prices in November as inflation was 11.53 per cent in that areas.
By contrast, urban residents experienced 11.37 per cent higher prices last month, said BBS though the government agencies carried out open market sales of certain essential items, including rice through trucks, and cut import duties for items namely edible oil, sugar, rice, onion and potatoes.
On the other hand, wage rates slightly increased to 8.10 per cent in November compared to October when it was 8.07 per cent, the BBS data showed.
