Bangladesh’s stocks close flat after high volatility

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-Bangladesh’s stocks finished flat on Thursday, after witnessing extreme volatility throughout the session as investors played both side of the trading fence.
Brokers said the market closed flat as optimistic investors took position on sector specific stocks while risk-average investors booked quick-gain on stocks that saw substantial rise in recent upsurge, taking market in flat territory.
After plunging by 37 points within first 5 minutes of trading, DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), recovered the initial losses within next 15 minutes of trading at 10:50am.
But, after 30 minutes of trading, DSEX went down by 25.65 points or 0.46 per cent to stand at 5,507.84 points at 11:00am.
However, last hours buying helped the index to close in flat green zone.
The key index of the DSE added 0.56 point, while the Selective Category Index of port city bourse lost 6.98 points at the closing.
DHAKA STOCK EXCHANGE:
DSEX, the prime index of the DSE, settled at 5,534.06 points, advancing 0.56 point or 0.01 per cent to finish at 5,534.06, after losing nearly 42 points in the previous day.
The DS30, comprising blue chips, also advanced 2.82 points or 0.14 per cent to close at 1,983.71 points.
However, the DSE Shariah Index (DSES) fell 0.76 points or 0.06 per cent to close at 1,275.55 points.
Turnover, the crucial indicator of the market, came down sharply to BDT 14.08 billion, which was 29 per cent lower than the previous day’s BDT 19.89 billion.
The losers took a strong lead over the gainers as 328 issues traded, 205 closed lower, 93 closed higher and 30 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.
Beximco dominated the DSE turnover chart with about 15.69 million shares worth nearly BDT 561 million changing hands, followed by IFAD Autos, Baraka Power, RAK Ceramics and Bangladesh Building Systems.
Shympur Sugar Mills was the day’s highest gainer, posting a 9.04 percent rise, while the newly listed Sonargoan Textile was the worst loser, plunging 7.74 per cent.
CHITTAGONG STOCK EXCHANGE:
The port city bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), however, closed in the red with its Selective Categories Index - CSCX –losing 6.98 points to settle at 10,281.13 points.
Losers beat gainers as 170 issues closed lower, 76 closed higher and 20 remained unchanged on the CSE.
The port city bourse traded 30.93 million shares and mutual fund units’ worth BDT 847 million in turnover.
