Bangladesh’s stocks end higher for sixth day

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Bangladesh’s stocks extended the gaining spell for the sixth day in a row on Wednesday as investors showed their buying spree amid post-election optimism.

Analysts said the market ended higher as some investors anticipated that the market would be better after the national election scheduled for December 30.

The investors were active from the beginning of the session and the upward trend continued till end of the session with no sign of revisal.

DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), settled at 5,349, advancing 49.08 points or 0.92 per cent over the previous day.

Only one trading sessions is left in the outgoing calendar year 2018.

The bourses will remain closed for the last four days of the outgoing year due to national elections (December 30), Bank holiday (December 31) and weekly holidays (December 28, 29).

The two other indices edged higher. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, advanced 12.93 points to finish at 1,867 and the DSES (Shariah) index gained 8.29 points to settle at 1,226.

Turnover, another important indicator of the market, remained low as the total turnover amounting to BDT 3.88 billion, which was BDT 3.57 billion in the previous day.

A total number of 102,387 trades were executed in the day’s trading session with trading volume of 112.87 million shares and mutual fund units.

The market cap of DSE increased to BDT 3,851 billion which was BDT 3,831 billion in the previous day.

The gainers took a modest lead over the losers as out of 341 issues traded, 221 closed higher, 76 ended lower and 44 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Khulna Power Company topped the day’s turnover chart with shares worth BDT 122 million changing hands, closely followed by Beximco Pharmaceuticals, National Life Insurance, Saiham Textile and JMI Syringes.

Phoenix Insurance was the day’s best performer, posting a gain of 8.88 per cent while Eastern Cables was the day’s worst loser, shedding 7.74 per cent.

The port city bourse CSE ended higher with the CSE All Share Price Index – CASPI – gaining 152 points to settle at 16,374 while the Selective Categories Index – CSCX –advancing 92 points to finish at 9,903.

Here too, the gainers beat the losers as 159 issues closed higher, 76 ended higher and 30 remained unchanged.
The port city bourse traded 8.04 million shares and mutual fund units worth BDT 619 million in turnover.
