Bangladesh’s stocks end lower for third day

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – Bangladesh’s stocks extended losses for the three consecutive sessions on Sunday as the risk-averse investors continued on selling spree on some large-cap stocks.

Both bourses – the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) ended lower.

The market started with a sharp decline in the morning which sustained till end of the session as the selling spree continued.

DHAKA STOCK EXCHANGE:

DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), finished at 4,605.08 points, shedding 31.14 points or 0.67 percent over the previous day.

The two other indices also closed in the red. The DS30 comprising blue chips fell 16.49 points or 0.94 percent to settle at 1,734.95 points.

The DSE Shariah Index (DSES) lost 9.12 points or 0.82 percent to close at 1,100.68 points.

Turnover, the important indicator of the market, also came down to BDT 4.57 billion, which was 25 percent lower than the previous session’s turnover of BDT 6.06 billion.

The losers took a strong lead over the gainers as out of 324 issues traded, 191 closed lower, 91 closed higher and 42 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Doreen Power Generations and Systems dominated the DSE turnover chart with some 2.97 million shares worth BDT 376 million changing hands, followed by Khulna Power Company BDT 140 million, MJL Bangladesh BDT 134 million, Fortune Shoes BDT 128 million and IFAD Autos BDT 113 million.

Golden Harvest Agro Industries was the day’s best performer, posting a 10.37 percent gain, while Sinobangla Industries was the worst loser, slumping by 23.87 percent following its non dividend declaration.

Chittagong Stock Exchange:

The port city bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also ended lower with its Selective Categories Index - CSCX – plunging by 54.74 points to settle at 8,620.62 points.

Losers beat gainers as 145 issues closed lower, 70 closed higher and 14 remained unchanged on the CSE.

The port city bourse traded 12.72 million shares and mutual fund units’ worth over BDT 381 million in turnover.
