Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-Ghulam Azam, a top convicted war criminal of Bangladesh died Thursday night.
The former Jamaat-e-Islami chief who was convicted for 90 years died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) around 10:10pm, hospital sources confirmed.
Azam, 92, was kept on life support as his physical condition deteriorated around 9:00pm, said Brigadier (retd) Abdul Mazid Bhuiyan, director of the BSMMU.
He was kept at a prison cell of the hospital since January 11, 2012, the very day he was arrested.
International Crimes Tribunal-1, dealing with the war crimes cases, sentenced Azam to 90 years in prison on July 15 last year.
Ghulam Azam was the ameer (chief) of East Pakistan Jamaat-e-Islami during the Liberation War in 1971. He also became ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat in 1991. He left the party’s top post in 2000 through handing over charge of the party to war crimes accused Motiur Rahman Nizami.
BODY HANDED OVER
The body of Azam has been handed over to his family members.
Jailer of the Dhaka Central Jail Md Nesar Alam said the body of the Jammat leader was handed over to his family members around 7:30am.
