Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – The central bank of Bangladesh has asked the commercial banks to establish hotline between their branches and nearby police stations to ensure security, officials said.
The Bangladesh Bank (BB), the country’s central bank, authorities has also announced a compensation package for the victims of the robbed bank.
We’ve asked the banks to set up hotline between their branches and nearby police stations to prevent incident like the Saver robbery,” SK Sur Chowdhury, deputy governor of the BB told BBN in Dhaka.
The central bank has already issued a circular in this connection and asked the chief executive officers and managing directors of all the scheduled banks for taking necessary measures to set up the hotline to ensure security.
Mr. Chowdhuy also said the security issue will be discussed at the next bankers’ meeting, scheduled for April 30.
The central bank has also asked the Association of Bankers, Bangladesh (ABB) for providing necessary financial supports to the victim families from their corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds, the deputy governor added.
The central bank has announced BDT 100,000 each for the family members of the victims from its own CSR fund.
Besides, the BB sent a three-member team on Wednesday to visit the spot for assessing security measures of the Bangladesh Commerce Bank Limited (BCBL) branch.
About eight to ten armed looters stormed into the Kathgora branch of the BCBL and shot down seven people on Tuesday.
Locals managed to get hold of two robbers. One of them was beaten to death by the mob while the other was handed over to police.
