Banks asked to implement daylight saving scheme

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- The central bank of Bangladesh on Monday asked the commercial banks for taking necessary measures to implement the daylight saving time (DST) program from Friday next, officials said.

On June 01, Bangladesh government decided to advance the clock by an hour from the zero hour on June 19 with the objective of minimizing the prevailing power crisis.

The Bangladesh Bank (BB), the country's central bank, issued a circular in this connection on Monday and asked the commercial banks to implement the government's decision properly.

"We've asked the banks to implement the DST program in line with the decision of the government," Executive Director of the BB ATM Nasir Uddin told BBN in the capital, Dhaka , adding that the practice will help minimize the existing power shortfall.

At least 70 countries of the world including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Denmark, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Iran, the Philippines and Pakistan have been able save on power consumption by using the DST system.
