Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – The central bank of Bangladesh has asked the commercial banks to keep their branches open at different places in Dhaka and Chittagong on July 15 to facilitate payment of wage and Eid bonus for workers in readymade garment (RMG) factories.
The bank branches, located in Dhaka city, Savar, Ashulia, Tongi, Gazipur, Narayanganj and Chittagong, have been asked to keep open on the day, according to a notification, issued by the Bangladesh Bank (BB), the country’s central bank, on Sunday.
The central bank also asked the chief executives of all scheduled banks for taking necessary measures to keep the branches open.
“The central bank has  taken the latest move in line with the home ministry’s request to ensure payment of wage and bonus for RMG workers ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr festival,” a BB senior official told BBN in Dhaka.
He also said the banks are allowed to fix their respective transaction period applying own consideration.
The banks have been instructed o ensure necessary security as well as to pay their staff due payment for working on a holiday, the circular said.
Besides, foreign exchange branches, officially known as authorised dealer (AD) branches, of the banks at airports, landports and seaports will remain open on the weekends – Friday and Saturday – to facilitate export-import business.
Currently, all 56 banks are operating export-import business with around 1,000 foreign exchange branches across the country.
