Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – The bank accounts of Harun or Rashid, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, and his wife Shireen Akter, have been frozen.
The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) issued a directive instructing banks to freeze all types of withdrawals from all accounts held by Harun and his wife.
A BFIU official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the order was issued following reports of suspicious transactions linked to the couple.
Harun or Rashid, a police officer who has faced significant criticism, was recently transferred from the Detective Branch to the crime and operations department of Bangladesh Police.
A subsequent High Court ruling condemned the practice of bringing individuals to the DB office and seating them at a dining table as a "mockery of the nation."
The students were held in DB custody for nearly a week.
Amid public outcry, Harun was transferred from the Detective Branch to the Crime and Operations Department.
Meanwhile, like several senior police officials closely affiliated with the Awami League government, he has been absent from the public eye since the fall of the government on August 5th, following a mass uprising that led to the ousting of Sheikh Hasina, former Bangladesh Prime Minister and President of the Awami League.
Hasina fled the country immediately after her stepping down and media reports confirmed she is now in India, the neighbouring country of Bangladesh.
