Last updated: September 12, 2012
Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - Bangladesh’s commercial banks will seek central bank's intervention for settlement of overdue accepted bills, particularly those involved in the Hallmark Group scam, bankers said.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Association of Bankers, Bangladesh (ABB) held in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday with its Chairman Nurul Amin in the chair.
"We'll seek the central bank's intervention over the issue in Thursday's (today) regular bankers' meeting to ensure stability in the country's banking sector," a senior member of the ABB told the FE.
The ABB member also said the overdue accepted bills, particularly those involved in the Hallmark scam, should be settled immediately to avoid any crisis in the banking sector.
The members of ABB, a representative organization of the chief executive officers (CEOs) of different commercial banks, also discussed various issues including extension of time for implementation of the latest BB instructions on loan classification and provisioning, interest rates on both lending and deposits at the meeting.
