Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - The Bangladesh Taka (BDT) has started an appreciating mode against the US dollar mainly due to lower demand for the greenback at customer level.
The average exchange rate of the US dollar at customer level came down to BDT 79.8346 on Thursday from BDT 79.8566 of the previous level. It was BDT 79.8662 on Tuesday.
“The BDT/US$ rate at customer level may fall further in the coming days following lower demand for the greenback in the market,” a senior treasury official of a leading commercial bank told BBN in Dhaka.
He also said the existing upward trend of BDT against the US dollar in the inter-bank foreign exchange market may continue in the near future.
The exchange rate of BDT remained stable against the US currency in early hour transactions on Sunday in inter-bank forex market.
The US dollar was quoted at maximum BDT 78.85 unchanged from the previous working day till the report was filed at 12:01 pm (local time).
However, the inter-bank call money rate remained stable in the range between 2.75 per cent and 4.50 per cent on the day mainly due to sufficient inflow of fund into the market.
The volume of overall transactions in the inter-bank call money market came down to BDT 52.57 billion on Thursday from BDT 52.96 billion of the previous working day, according to the central bank latest statistics, released on Sunday.
