Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)– At least 206 people were killed across the country in the first month of the year putting social violence as the number one cause behind these killings, Bangladesh Human Rights Commission (BHRC) said on Monday.
On an average 6.7 people got killed each day while the total number of rape victims, including six children, was alarmingly high. As many as 14 women and children were raped in January while three of them were killed after the crime.
These were revealed in a report of the BHRC prepared on the basis of information from districts, upazilas and municipalities (pourasava) and reports of the daily newspapers.
The report also said 157 people were killed in social violence while 12 were political killings, eight were killed by law enforcers, two in acid violence, five were for sexual harassment, five were lynched, two for negligence in treatment, six for dowry, four were killed by the BSF and one domestic help and one journalist were killed.
The country must establish rule of law at every level if it wants to instituionalise democracy and wants to establish a humanistic society, the BHRC said, adding that this ever-increasing killing trend can be reduced only by establishing rule of law.
