Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson and Opposition Leader Khaleda Zia is looking for a house to rent, party insiders have said.
Though Khaleda has her Gulshan house and the official residence of the opposition leader in the parliament on Minto Road, she was not willing to stay in any of them, they said, adding that that was why a suitable and secured house was being searched preferably in the city’s Gulshan area.
“A rented house is being looked for as the government has unjustly evicted her from her cantonment house,” BNP Joint Secretary General Amanullah Aman assigned with overseeing the shifting of the household goods from Khaleda’s cantonment house was quoted by the New Age, a local newspaper, as saying.
Asked why she would not stay in her Gulshan house, Mr. Aman said, “A tenant is now staying there. The house was rented out for a certain number of years. He should not be evicted from it within a short notice.”
Khaleda’s house at 196 Gulshan Avenue, also donated to her by the government in 1981, is built on a 32-katha land.
Although the government has recently renovated the official residence of the opposition leader at 29 Minto Road in Dhaka, the newspaper reported quoting party insiders that she would not enter the house for political reasons. Khaleda’s personal assistance Shimul Biswas admitted the fact.
He said: “The house is being looked after by the party leaders. But, madam is yet to give us any official instructions in this regard.”
Currently, Khaleda Zia is living in her younger brother Shamim Eskander’s house in Gulshan.
