Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)– Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia-led opposition is set to observe ‘Dhaka Cholo’ (Let’s go to Dhaka) program on Monday, leading to the holding of a grand rally in the capital to press for restoration of the caretaker government system.
Khaleda Zia will address the grand rally that will start at 2:00 pm (local time).
Opposition leader Khaleda Zia is expected to map out her second phase of agitation for the restoration of a non-party interim caretaker government, in her address to the meeting.
She will announce the expansion of her four-party alliance, taking in its fold various nationalist and Islamic parties, the BNP leaders said.
Tension between the ruling and the opposition camps mounted over past few days with the rival camps engaging in a bitter war of words and accusing each other of plotting sabotage centring the rally.
Life and economic activities in Dhaka city were affected seriously on Sunday as most public transports stopped plying the roads without any prior notice ahead of the opposition’s Monday’s mass rally.
Transactions at main business centres, banks and shopping malls across the city were far less than normal on the day. Many residents could not move from one place to another because of the crisis of public transports.
Besides, thousands of people who come to Dhaka for business purposes everyday were forced to drop their travel plan as a large number of inter-district buses suspended their operations without any prior announcement.
