Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)– The main opposition BNP on Thursday alleged that the government had committed a serious misconduct by distorting the Word Bank statement regarding revival of Padma bridge funding.
“The World Bank had to issue another statement and blamed the government for distorting its statement regarding loan agreement revival which has created a shameful situation for the government,” BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told reporters at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the city.
Mirza Alamgir said what government is saying about Padma bridge loan agreement is not correct at all. World Bank said it would consider its decision if only the government implement the conditions set by the lender.
“Prime minister, finance minister and secretaries are claiming that the World Bank has agreed again to fund the Padma bridge which is absolutely false. The government is lying to the people. It’s a severe misconduct. The government should resign,” he noted.
On September 26, the World Bank in a statement said funding of the Padma bridge project will depend on the satisfactory implementation of all the measures it has asked the government to take.
The World Bank earlier announced that it was re-engaging in the Padma bridge project after the government had fulfilled some of its conditions, but for the project’s implementation the bank also wanted a fair probe into the graft allegations.
