Lalmonirhat, Bangladesh (BBN)-The long march of BNP designed to put pressure on the government for the fair share of all common rivers including Teesta reached Dalia point in Lalmonirhat on Wednesday.

Teesta, a common river, flows from India to Bangladesh. But Bangladeshi people are depriving of its fair share of water as Indian government constructed dams on tributaries of the river in Sikkim and diverted water by the Gazaldoba barrage through a link to the Upper Mahnanda River.

The water flow of the Teesta dropped a record low of 300 cusec in the current season hampering irrigation system during the current season in Lalmonirhat, Rangpur and Kurigram districts.

Meanwhile, the water of Teesta river at Hatibandha point of Lalmonirhat has dramatically increased immediately after the long march began on Tuesday from Uttara of the capital, Dhaka.

The flow of the Teesta water into the Bangladesh territory reached 3,000 cusec as of Tuesday afternoon, said an official of Bangladesh Water Development Board.

“If the water flow remains the same, there will be no water problem for irrigation during the current season in the northern districts,” he said.

The march led by BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will be wrapped up after a public rally at Teesta Barrage point in Dalia within hours.
