BTRC says YouTube viewing after removal of controversial content

Last updated: October 1, 2012
Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- The operation of YouTube in Bangladesh will be resumed immediately after removal of the objectionable content from their site, the telecom regulator said.
"The YouTube would be available in the country while the authority would remove the controversial content from their site. Otherwise there is nothing to be hopeful for it," the regulatory body chairman (in-charge) Giashuddin Ahmed told reporters in the capital Dhaka on Sunday.
The regulator-Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) -- on September 17 blocked the video sharing website YouTube in the country over a video titled 'Innocence of Muslims' as it mocks Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH).
Mr. Ahmed also said they took the decision as Google US and the Google APAC that control the IT services operations including YouTube facility across Asia pacific region did not respond to BTRC's request to block the film themselves.
The film sparked violent protests around the globe with protesters attacking Western embassies in different countries.
