Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – Trade union activists have stressed the need for implementing the minimum wage structure for apparel workers and providing the Rana Plaza victim families with adequate compensation for their livelihood. 
 
Leaders of the Bangladesh Free Trade Union Congress (BFTUC) put forward a set of recommendations for wellbeing of the working class in the country’s readymade garment (RMG) sector at the May Day rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club (JPC) in the capital Dhaka.
 
The BFTUC leaders also formed a human chain at the same place to press home their recommendations. BFTUC President AA Mukid Khan presided over the function while the congress leader Pulak Ranjan Dhar conducting. 
 
Acting general secretary of BFTUC and secretary general of the International Trade Union Confederation-Bangladesh Chapter (ITUC- BC) AR Chowdhury Ripon and BFTUC leaders China Rahman, Nur Mohammad Akand and Lutfunnahar were, among others, present on the occasion. 
 
They favoured implementation of an eight-hour working period, formation of a legitimate wage structure, introduction of a rationing system for garment workers, providing construction workers with all equipments from owners and introduction of insurance for the construction workers, their accommodation and revision of the labour law and its implementation. 
 
Besides, Shadhin Bangla Garment Sramik Karmachari Federation (SBGSKF) held a meeting in front of the JPC where its president Shamima Nasrin, general secretary Abul Kalam Azad, publicity secretary Shantona and president of SBGSKF (Mirpur thana) addressed.  
 
They demanded allowing new registrations for trade unions, added facilities for garment workers and keeping adequate fire safety measures at factories and necessary trainings for apparel workers.
