Calls to introduce a law banning companies from telling women to wear high heels at work were rejected by the government in April

Side effect of wearing high-heels.
Aberdeen, Scotland (BBN) - More needs to be done to stop women being forced to wear high heels at work, Aberdeen researchers have said.
Calls to introduce a law banning companies from telling women to wear high heels at work were rejected by the government in April, reports BBC.
The issue was debated after one woman who was sent home for wearing flat shoes set up a petition.
The University of Aberdeen researchers recommended further investigation into the issue.
The review examined research into the physical damage and injury that can be caused, as well as the social and cultural aspects surrounding the wearing of high heels.
IS IT LEGAL TO FORCE WOMEN TO WEAR HIGH HEELS AT WORK?
It found large amounts of studies showed a link between wearing high heels and an increased risk of bunions, pain and injury.
However, it found a lack of clear evidence of an association between high heel wear and osteoarthritis.
RISKS AND BENEFITS
The authors drew a distinction between the UK - where the government has pledged to develop guidelines and raise awareness that female workers should not be forced to wear high heels without introducing new legislation - and the Canadian province of British Columbia, which has amended legislation to now prohibit employers from requiring staff to wear high heels.
Dr Max Barnish, who led the research, said: "From our review it is clear that despite the huge amount of evidence showing heels are bad for individuals' health, there are complex social and cultural reasons that make high-heel wearing attractive."
Dr Heather Morgan, a lecturer at the University of Aberdeen, added: "Of course we are not trying to tell anyone that they should or shouldn't wear high heels but we hope this review will inform wearers to help them weigh up the health risks with social benefits."
She added that it was hoped the review would "put pressure on law makers to toughen up legislation so that no-one is forced against their will to wear them in the workplace or in licensed public social venues".

New Delhi, India (BBN) - Emma Watson is not only championing gender equality as the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, but is also impressing Indian fashionistas with her Disney princess look in musical romantic fantasy film Beauty and the Beast.
And guess what, it is not too difficult to look like her, say experts, reports Hindustan Times quoting IANS.
Sushma Khan, national creative director of make-up at Lakmé Salon, and Audrey D’souza, a TIGI educator, decode for us easy ways to prefect the Belle look.
FOR MAKE-UP
* Use a lightweight foundation blended well that will give you a healthy and moisturized look paired with a concealer under your eyes.
* Brush out your brows and fill them in softly with a brow pencil.
* To achieve the modern graphic eye liner, line your eyes with a soft brown gel liner and flick it out like a cat eye, except leave the flick unfilled.
* Complete the look with a coral lipstick which will balance out the eyeliner
FOR HAIR
* Make sure you have some tools handy when you decide to do this on yourself; a dryer, a medium sized tongs, bobby pins, u-pins and a back-combing brush.
It’s always better if your hair is a day old and not washed the same day.
* Make sure your hair has enough texture to work with; take large sections and spray every section with a heat protected product that will make your curls last more longer and define them.
Use the medium tongs on every section and curl it away from the face giving it a looser texture to work with.
* Once you’re done with the style, open it using some smoothing cream to loosen the curls and add more shine and softness.
* Tie a ponytail at your occipital bone and fix the hair around the ponytail to create more texture and definition to the style.
Take smaller pieces of the sections and dress them around the ponytail for better grip and a much fuller look making sure all the hair in the ponytail is incorporated.
* Once the back is complete, take smaller sections from the front and dress it away from the face.
You can twist and open the twist slightly teasing it with your fingers and then fix it on the ponytail making sure the whole look comes together.
* The front section has to be raised while blow drying to make sure that extra volume is created on the roots.
Once that’s done, hold the hair in the same position and spray it to create a wave and fix it in the same position.
* Fix the front section towards the side or towards the ponytail depending on how long or short the hair is.
* At the end spritz a shine or setting spray to lock in the moisture and the look.

Forget mirror manicure, soon you will be able to paint your nails with real silver, platinum and gold for healthier fingertips

Washington, US (BBN) - Forget mirror manicure, soon you will be able to paint your nails with real silver, platinum and gold for healthier fingertips.
A team of researchers has now developed a new way to add the metals to nail polish with minimal additives, resulting in durable, tinted and potentially antibacterial nail colouring, reports hindustantimes quoting ANI.
Nail polish comes in a bewildering array of colours.
Current colouring techniques commonly incorporate pigment powders and additives.
Scientists have recently started exploring the use of nanoparticles in polishes and have found that they can improve their durability and, in the case of silver nanoparticles, can treat fungal toenail infections.
Marcus Lau, Friedrich Waag and Stephan Barcikowski wanted to see if they could come up with a simple way to integrate metal nanoparticles in nail polish.
The researchers started with store-bought bottles of clear, colourless nail polish and added small pieces of silver, gold, platinum or an alloy to them.
To break the metals into nanoparticles, they shone a laser on them in short bursts over 15 minutes.
Analysis showed that the method resulted in a variety of coloured, transparent polishes with a metallic sheen.
The researchers also used laser ablation to produce a master batch of metal nanoparticles in ethyl acetate, a polish thinner, which could then be added to individual bottles of polish.
This could help boost the amount of production for commercialization.
The researchers said that the technique could also be used to create coatings for medical devices.
The study appears in ACS’ journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry.

We give you a lowdown on getting through the season with fabulous hair: from do-it-yourself remedies like hot oil massage to washing your hair less often

New Delhi, India (BBN) - Summers are a great time to be out in the sun, feel the sand under your feet and soak in the warm summer breeze but its not just skin that needs to be protected in the scorching weather but also hair.
One can follow some do-it-yourself remedies like hot oil massage and washing less often to make tresses summer ready, reports hindustantimes quoting IANS.
Audrey D’Souza, TIGI Educator and Sangeeta Velaskar, Vice President and Head, Medical Services and R&D, Kaya Limited give you a lowdown on getting through the season with fabulous hair!
* AVOID HEAT TREATMENTS: With the sun rays being strong; additional use of any heat styling products will damage your hair even further.
* NIGHT TREATMENT: Wrap a towel around your hair after applying a leave-in conditioner to the dry and frizzy hair areas and leave overnight.
Voila! Wake up with tamed, soft and unfrizzy hair.
* HOT OIL RINSE: Coconut, olive, and avocado oils penetrate easily into the hair shaft.
Shampoo hair as usual, then massage in oil from ends to roots.
Rinse and condition as usual. This will instantly make your hair feel softer to touch and much more hydrated.
* RETAIN MOISTURE AND KEEP HAIR PROTECTED: The ultimate triple threat for your hair during summers is the combination of heat, sun and humidity.
It’s important to make sure your hair retains its moisture and stays protected, in this case a heat protector would work wonders and also provide that extra UV protection to your hair.
It also reduces the damage caused by wind, especially if your hair is prone to tangling or frizz.
* WASH LESS OFTEN: Frequent washing strips your scalp of its natural oils, which in turn stimulates additional oil production and makes you feel the need to wash it even more.
Try simply rinsing in the shower after a day at the beach or pool, and see if that gets rid of some extra oil. Use a natural dry shampoo, instead of regular shampoo to go a bit longer without washing.
* USE A WIDE TOOTH COMB INSTEAD OF BRUSHING: Avoid pulling anything through your hair when it’s wet, since that’s when it is most susceptible to breaking.
Wide-tooth combs are most gentle for untangling hair, as brushes can pull and tear when they snag strands.

Grooming your eyebrows is somewhat like a short-term investment plan - you invest a bit and the returns are huge

Mumbai, India (BBN) - Grooming your eyebrows is somewhat like a short-term investment plan - you invest a bit and the returns are huge.
Ignoring it leads to unruly chaos, and investing in correct products and deploying them well can raise your chic quotient, reports The Times of India quoting TNN.
BEEF THE BROWS UP
Sparse brows post overzealous tweezing creates gaps that need some serious filling. ''Draw out your brows with a matte eyebrow powder as it blends into the backdrop easily.
Pick a shade that is close to your natural brow colour,'' says makeup artist Clint Fernandes. For Indian women, a grey-brown powder works well. Or use a matte eye shadow. ''Brush off the excess powder and use a clean mascara wand,'' he adds.
CLEAR MASCARA = TAMED BROWS
Multi-tasking products are always an asset.
A clear mascara, for instance, defines your eyelashes and also helps set your brows.
Slick it on with brow colour underneath.
Use just a tiny amount or your brows will look crunchier than French fries.
Other brow accessories that can be in your arsenal for bushy growth are brow conditioners - they soften pokey hair.
For a strong brow game, brow waxes and eyebrow gels are good buys.
PERMANENT SOLUTIONS
If you suffer from hairloss in the brow area because of a medical reason, tattoos work well.
According to Fernandes, ''People who have lost hair in the area or have scars can opt for tattoos; it is safe and looks real.'' Holistic beauty expert Suparna Trikha advises not to wet the brows for a week after the tattoo. It'd need a touch-up once in 3 to 4 years.
BROW BASICS
A home brow-grooming kit must have:
Tweezers, eyebrow powder, eyebrow pencil, clear mascara and a brow comb.
Buy eyebrow powders for covering brow gaps.
If no gel is available, set your brows using Vaseline or aloe vera gel.
CASTOR OIL FOR FAST GROWTH
Use a bit of castor oil on eyebrow hair before going to sleep.
Castor oil promotes hair growth and can be used on both eyebrows and eyelashes.
Avoid using it at daytime because castor oil is thick and it can look messy.

COCONUT AND LEMON
Add a few drops of lemon juice to freshly prepared coconut milk and mix well.
Keep the glass of coconut milk and lemon juice into refrigerator for a few hours, said a blogpost published in Stylish.In.
A thick foamy layer will appear over the glass, which needs to be applied on the scalp and entire length of the hair right away.
Steam your hair for 15-20 minutes after this and follow it up with a wash. Repeat this process regularly to get straighter hair.
EGGS AND OLIVE OIL
Eggs play an important role in making your hair stronger and shiner.
Olive oil helps keep your hair well moisturized.
These ingredients, when combined together, help straighten your hair naturally.
Beat two eggs properly and mix in four tablespoons of olive oil.
Apply this mixture to your hair and scalp, then comb your hair with a wide-toothed comb.
Wear a shower cap and leave it on for 30 to 45 minutes.
Rinse it off and wash your hair with a mild shampoo.
FULLER’S EARTH
Fuller’s earth, also known as multani mitti, can help straighten your hair naturally.
It can even help get rid of frizzy hair. Additionally, being a mild cleansing agent, it will not damage your hair.
Mix together one cup of fuller’s earth, one egg white and two tablespoons of rice flour.
Add enough water to the mixture to get a thin texture.
Apply this mixture to your hair and comb your hair with a wide-toothed comb.
Leave it in for one hour, and then wash it out with water.
Now generously spray milk on your hair.
Leave it on for 15 minutes, and then shampoo and condition your hair.
CELERY LEAVES

Crush a few fresh celery leaves and mix them with a little water.
Squeeze it to extract the juice and store it in bottle.
The bottle has to be left unused for at least a day, so as to allow the juice to develop properties and effectiveness for straightening.
Using them regularly, preferably in the morning, before bath will help in straightening hair.
Massage it well on the scalp and leave it for 15-30 minutes, prior to washing it off with a shampoo.
ALOE VERA
Aloe vera contains several enzymes that promote healthy hair growth and makes your hair smooth and soft.
Also, aloe vera gel easily penetrates into the hair strands and keeps them well moisturized.
Due to this moisturizing property, it can straighten your hair naturally.
Mix one-half cup each of aloe vera gel and warm olive oil.
Optionally, mix in six drops each of rosemary oil and sandalwood oil.
Massage the mixture into your hair and scalp.
Cover your hair with a shower cap and leave it on for one to two hours.

New Jersey, US (BBN)-Abrar Shahin, who is of Palestinian descent and wears Hijab has been named best dressed among Clifton High School seniors, New Jersey.

According to NorthJersey.com, the senior class pick for best-dressed female senior at Clifton High School sports a black skirt and skinny jeans, ankle-high boots and a cropped white blazer in her yearbook photo. Her makeup is just about perfect, capped with plum-toned lipstick, reports ARY News.

But there is one other fashion accessory that makes Abrar Shahin stand out: a black, white and blue-green patterned scarf — a hijab — that wraps around her head and drapes around her neck.

The local news quoted Abrar Shahin as saying that “there are always cheerleaders who win and popular girls, so I was very surprised it was me, being a hijabi.”

With her trendy style, Shahin, who has a clothing-store job in Paramus and plans to attend Rutgers this fall, is shattering stereotypes about Islamic fashion while also keeping true to her religious tradition. The “best dressed” vote also shows how acceptance has grown at one of the largest and most diverse high schools in the state. The class of 2015, which graduated Friday, includes many immigrants and first-generation students whose families hail from across the globe.

Even in an area as diverse as North Jersey, Clifton stands out for its global flair. The high school, with about 3,300 students, is 52 percent Hispanic, 35 percent white, 8 percent Asian and 5 percent black, according to state records.

But the more telling record is the ancestry breakdown in the US census, which shows more than 65 groups represented in the city. Italian, Polish, Puerto Rican, Arab and Peruvian are among the largest groups. Many people with Turkish, Russian, West Indian, Albanian, Ukrainian and Hungarian backgrounds also live in Clifton.
