Ivy wins N'ganj polls

Narayanganj, Bangladesh (BBN)- Awami League mayoral candidate Dr Salina Hayat Ivy was unofficially reelected mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) on Thursday with a margin of 79, 567 votes.
Ivy bagged 175,611 votes while her contestant BNP nominee Sakhawat got 96,044, according to unofficial results, announced by Returning Officer Nuruzzaman Talukdar at his temporary office at Narayanganj Club around 11:25pm (local time).
A total of 2, 96, 036 voters out of 4,79,392 cast their votes to elect the city mayor, 27 ward councillors and nine women councillors from reserved seats.
Besides, 156 general councillor candidates contested the election in 27 wards, while there were 38 councillor contenders in nine reserved seats.
Ivy has been re-elected as the mayor of NCC for the second consecutive term.
The voter turnout, especially of female one, was huge as people were seen standing in long queues to cast their votes. Though the presence of female voters was high in the morning, it decreased to some extent at noon.
Sakhawat Hossain Khan cast his vote at NarayanganjAdarshaSchool polling centre at Jamtala of Majdair area in the morning while Ivy cast her vote at ShishubaghPrimary School polling centre in Paschim Deubhog area around 9:45 am.
It is the country's first city election that was held along the political party line.
Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said the NCC election was held in a free and fair manner due to proper support of the candidates and their followers.
The CEC came up with the remark while addressing a post-election press conference at the Election Commission after the end of voting at 4:00 pm.
The city corporation is comprised of 27 wards under two upazilas (sub-district) -- Sadar and Bandar-- and four police stations -- Narayanganj, Bandar, Siddhirganj and Fatullah.

Road accidents kill eight in northern Bangladesh

Rangpur, Bangladesh (BBN)- At least eight people were killed and 15 others injured in four separate road accidents in three northern districts of Bangladesh on Monday.
Ten persons were injured after a Dinajpur-bound night coach from Dhaka hit railing of a bridge at Dhaperhat point on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway under Pirganj upazila.
Being informed, police from Pirganj Thana and Barodorga Highway Police Camp rushed to the spot and sent the injured ones to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH).
Later, three critically injured passengers -- Golam Mostafa, 27, and Dukhu Mian, 32, of Dinajpur Sadar upazila and Azahar Ali, 30, of Birganj upazila in Dinajpur district -- succumbed to their injuries, according to reports.
Two people were killed after a bus crushed them at Rabeya Mour point on the Syedpur-Dinajpur highway under Syedpur upazila on Sunday night.
The victims were waiting for bus there when the accident occurred, a local police official said.

In Gaibandha, two passengers were killed and eight others injured when a Gaibandha-bound bus from Dhaka was skidded off at Dakghar point on the Dhaka-Rangpur highway under Polashbari upazila in the northern district.
The injured passengers of the bus were admitted to Gaibandha Sadar Modernised Hospital, a police official said.

Trawler capsize kills nine in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Nine people including six children, were killed and 20 others remain missing as a passenger trawler capsized in Arial Kha River in the country’s central Narsingdi district on Saturday.
The trawler with an unspecified number of passengers on board sank in the river due to excessive load when it was heading towards a local shrine, a local police official said.
However, some passengers managed to swim ashore.
A team of divers reached the spot around 3:00pm (local time) and started the rescue operation, the police official added.

Road crash kills 8 in Bangladesh

Madaripur, Bangladesh (BBN)- At least eight people were killed and 33 others injured as a bus plunged into a roadside ditch in the country’s central Madaripur district on Friday.
The accident took place around 3:15pm when the bus driver lost control after hitting a bridge at Samaddar in the Sadar upazila, leaving at least five people dead on the spot, a police official said.
Later, three more people succumbed to their injuries at Madaripur Sadar Hospital, the official added.

3 killed in Bangladesh road crash

Sirajganj, Bangladesh (BBN)-At least 3 people were killed when a truck hit another on Dhaka-Bogra highway in Sirajganj, a north western district of Bangladesh, early Sunday.

The accident took place around 5:30am in the west side of Bangabandhu Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge in Sirajganj, local police said.

Earlier on Saturday, 10 people were killed in the west side of the bridge in a three-vehicle pile-up.

A speedy truck hit a gas cylinder-laden mini truck parked at the highway side in Konabari area of Kamarkhanda upazila in Sirajganj, leaving the three including the truck driver dead on the spot, the police added.

On information, police rushed to the spot, rescued the injured and recovered the bodies.

The injured were admitted to local hospital.

Train rams pick-up van in Bangladesh, 3 killed

Gazipur, Bangladesh (BBN) - At least three persons were killed and six injured when a train rammed a pick-up van in Gazipur, a central city of Bangladesh, Thursday morning.

The accident took place around 10:30am when a train rammed a pick-up van stationed on the rail track in Vitipara area of Sreepur upazila in Gazipur, Mohsinul Kadir, officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station, confirmed the BBN.

The three persons died instantly, the OC said.
Of the injured, three received first aid and three others were sent to National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation for treatment, he added.

7 'robbers' beaten dead in Bangladesh

Narsingdi, Bangladesh (BBN)-A mob beat seven suspected robbers to death while they stormed into the house of a local in Narsingdi, a central district of Bangladesh, early Monday.
Another “robber” who also faced the wrath of the mob was undergoing treatment in Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, local police said.
Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately, police added.
A gang of robbers stormed into the house of a local at Bhatpara in Sadar upazila of Narsingdi around 2:00am, said police quoting local people.
After hearing the house owner’s scream, locals went to the scene and chased the robbers.
At one stage, they managed to catch eight of the robbers and beat them up, leaving seven dead on the spot.
On information, police recovered the bodies and sent them to the hospital for autopsy.

4 killed in Tangail road crash

Tangail, Bangladesh (BBN)-At least four people were killed and two injured in a road accident in Tangail, a central district of Bangladesh, early Wednesday.
The accident occurred around 12:30am when a truck hit a CNG-run three-wheelers in Kalihati area of the district, local police said.
The injured were receiving treatment at Tangail Medical College and Hospital, police added.

Daylong strike in Sylhet Monday

Sylhet, Bangladesh (BBN) – A local social organisation on Saturday called a daylong general strike in the district for Monday protesting the implication of the name of Sylhet City Corporation mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury in the supplementary charge-sheet in the former Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria murder case.

Abdur Razzak, president of the Amra Sylhetbasi, a local social organisation, announced the shutdown from a mass rally held at the Court Point in the city in the afternoon.

He said they will observe the strike from 6:00am to 6:00pm.

Earlier, on Thursday Senior Assistant Superintendent Meherunnesa Parul of Habiganj Criminal Investigation Department (CID), also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the supplementary charge-sheet against 32 people, including former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s political secretary Harris Chowdhury and SCC mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, in the case.

Five people, including Kibria, were killed and 70 others injured in a grenade attack on a public meeting of local Awami League at Baidder Bazar in Sadar upazila of Habiganj on January 27, 2005.

Fresh 72hr blockade: One killed in Jhenidah

Jhenidah, Bangladesh (BBN)- An activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, was killed and five including three law enforcers were injured as blockade supporters clashed with policemen in Kotchandpur upazila headquarter on the first day of the opposition’s nationwide 72-hour road-rail-waterway blockade on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Israil Hossain,18, a local activist of Jamaat’s student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir.

Witnesses said when some blockade supporters were picketing at the bus stand area in the town police chased them, triggering a clash in the morning. At one stage, police opened fire on the opposition activists to disperse them, leaving Israil Hossain dead on the spot, according to reports.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led 18-party alliance called a daylong hartal in Kochandpur and Moheshpur upazilas for Sunday protesting the killing.

The BNP -led opposition alliance on Friday night announced another spell of nationwide 72-hour road, railway and waterways blockade demanding non political polls time government and unconditional release of its top leaders.

At least 21 people were killed in the first three-day spells of the opposition’s blockade that ended on Friday morning.
