Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- The central bank of Bangladesh purchased US$20 million more from a leading commercial banks on Thursday to help keep the inter-bank foreign exchange (forex) market stable, officials said.
“We’re purchasing the US currency from the bank directly at market rate to protect the interests of exporters and migrant workers by keeping the exchange rate of the local currency against the US dollar stable,” a senior official of the Bangladesh Bank (BB) told BBN in Dhaka.
The US dollar was quoted at BDT 77.80 in the inter-bank forex market on the day unchanged from the previous level, market operators said.
A total of $1.16 billion was bought from the commercial banks between July 2 and August 20 of the current fiscal year (FY) 2015-16 for offsetting its increased supply to the market.
“We may continue buying of the US dollar from the commercial banks in line with the market requirement,” the central banker hinted.
The BB bought $3.76 billion from the commercial banks in the last financial year.
In FY’14 and FY’13, the central bank had bought $5.15 billion and $4.54 billion respectively, the BB data showed.
Bangladesh’s foreign exchange reserve rose to $26.11 billion on Thursday from $25.06 billion of the previous day after the US dollar purchase.

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-Directives have been given to all the airports of Bangladesh to get ready for handling the international relief materials coming for the quake-torm Nepal, said Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The airports are: Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, Chittagong airports, Sylhet airport and Syedpur airport.
Even the Lalmonirhat Air Strip was asked to keep prepared for dealing with the aid, the PM said.
A strong earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale rattled Nepal on April 25, making Kathmandu a city of death and destruction.
The quake left over 5,000 dead and several thousand buildings destroyed.
The Bangladesh government has already talked to India so that the relief materials could go to Nepal through the Banglabandha Land Port, the PM said.
Hasina made the disclosure while she was addressing the inaugural session of the International Conference on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for Sustainable Development at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.
The Bangladesh government has already sent relief materials to friendly neighbour Nepal which had helped Bangladesh during its Liberation War, and steps are being taken to send more relief items, she added.
