Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – Chevron Bangladesh has won ‘Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Award (AREA) 2014-South Asia’ for its corporate responsibility initiatives, conferred by Enterprise Asia.

The award was officially announced on Tuesday at a ceremony held at the JW Marriott in New Delhi, said a press release issued by the US-based oil company.

A total of 35 applications were received under the Social Empowerment category from the South Asia sub-region (comprising of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka).   Chevron is the only organization from Bangladesh that has been honored under the Social Empowerment category. After being shortlisted for the award, representatives from Enterprise Asia visited Chevron’s Dhaka offices for an audit visit in January.

Enterprise Asia is a non-governmental organisation that works with governments, NGOs and other organisations to promote competitiveness and entrepreneurship development as a source of indigenous economic growth.

It has several offices across South-East Asia, including Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand.

Chevron Bangladesh’s social investment initiatives are focused on economic development, education and health, and collectively reach 30,000 people living near its facilities in the North-East of the country.

Of these, about 4,000 families are directly engaged in economic development programs that provide livelihood support and skills training, over 3,000 underserved children attend pre-primary schools and receive merit-based scholarships, and 130,000 medical services are provided to the underprivileged every year from three community clinics.
