Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)– International climate talks will resume in Bangkok on Sunday after Cancun Conference last year that failed to gain a strong commitment from the world leaders to cut greenhouse gas emission.
The six-day meeting at UN Conference Centre (UNCC) will be marked by two pre-session workshops — one on technology transfer to developing countries and the other on National Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA).
The most important issue, emission cut, is missing from the formal agenda in Bangkok conference, representatives from developing countries said.
A 12-member Bangladesh delegation headed by the environment secretary will take part in the talks.
The secretary reportedly said Bangladesh will try for membership in Technology Executive Committee (TEC) from the Asia region.
Brazil, South Africa, India, and China have already voiced concern that the Bangkok negotiations are heavily weighted in favour of developed countries’ interests.
They said many developed countries led by the US are in continued efforts to weaken the rules on emission cut.
